Cedar
Real cedar board and batten is beautiful, and it's a legitimate traditional choice. It's also wood, which means it moves with moisture, needs refinishing on a real schedule to keep water out of the grain, and is more vulnerable to the combination of standing shade-moisture and salt air than a lot of homeowners expect when they buy it. On a shaded, damp lot near the water, cedar's maintenance clock runs faster than it would inland.
Engineered Wood (LP SmartSide)
Engineered wood siding is wood-based with a resin-treated core and factory coating, and it holds up better than raw lumber. But it's still an organic wood product at its core, and the failure mode that matters here is what happens at cut edges, fastener penetrations, and butt joints if they aren't field-sealed exactly to spec — that's precisely where board and batten concentrates its seams. In a high-rain, high-humidity coastal climate, we don't think that installation-sensitivity is worth the risk.
Vinyl
Vinyl board and batten exists, but it's a thin extruded product that telegraphs waviness in strong light, has real limits on how it can be fastened (it has to hang, not be nailed tight, to handle thermal expansion), and doesn't hold paint if a homeowner ever wants to change the color. It's a different weight class of product than what we install.
Budget Fiber Cement (Cemplank, Allura)
These are legitimate fiber cement products, and fiber cement as a category is the right call for this climate. Our reason for standardizing on James Hardie specifically is the factory-baked ColorPlus finish, the depth of climate-zone engineering in their formulations, and a warranty structure with a real transfer process — details that matter more over fifteen and twenty years than they do on day one.
James Hardie
Hardie fiber cement is cement, sand, and cellulose fiber — non-combustible, dimensionally stable, and engineered by climate zone rather than as one formulation for the whole country. For board and batten specifically, that stability matters at every batten and every butt joint: the material isn't swelling, shrinking, or wicking water the way wood-based products can. ColorPlus finish is baked on at the factory under conditions a job-site paint crew can't replicate, and it comes with a longer, more useful warranty on the finish than field-applied paint gets.

What Our Installation Process Looks Like
